Read UP!

Greetings, Fans!

As many of you know, not only do I absolutely enjoy writing~~it's literally my favorite thing to do, but my second passion is reading.  The problem for me, I find, is that I want to write, and then I want to read at the same time, but so far, technology hasn't invented a device for me to do that yet, or so I believe, and until then, I have to split my passions.

If you've never heard of a website called goodreads.com, you're really missing out.  It's a great site to document all the books you've read, meet friends, and use discussion forums to talk about the authors and books you most enjoy.  Also, on goodreads, you can purchase books, set goals for the amount of books you wish to read, and recommend books to others and receive recommendations.  And, if you're an indie author, you may post your own books, but you cannot recommend your own work to other followers.  For that, you must place ads for a small fee.

If you didn't know by now, I am a huge fan of mysteries, true crime and memoirs.  Or, perhaps I should reverse that and say memoirs, true crime and mysteries.  No matter which, I love all three equally, and I am going to share with you a few of my favorite memoirs.  As I mentioned in previous posts, I enjoy reading my favorite celebrity's lives and finding out what path they have chosen.  I hope you enjoy my selection detailed below.

First Up, Luther Vandross!  He is one of the best, if not the most talented balladeer, of our time.  When I tell you there will never be another Luther, or as some referred to him as 'Luuufer', to ever come this way again.  I read this on one Saturday afternoon.  Not only did Luther have a distinct crisp and pureness to his voice, he was one hell of a lyricist.  There are many commercials that you enjoy today, wherein Luther wrote the jingles.  Much has been said about Luther's sexuality, and although I personally have my own views on that, it doesn't matter because he is my all-time favorite male singer, or shall I say, he sits next to my other all-time favorite, Marvin Gaye.

I was blessed to see him live four times, when he came to Pittsburgh at the Stanley Theater, and three times at the Civic Arena (name changed to Mellon Arena now~~soon to be razed).  He put on a dynamic and awesome show.  He was a gem.  I miss him so much, and I still mourn his loss.   Gone too soon, my friend!

Second Up, the lovely and talented Miss Pam Grier.  Oh, let me tell ya something.  This woman here has a stage presence like no other.  I want to be like her when I grow up.  She's smart, sexy, and tough!  She handles it well with such class, as a lady ought to be.  I loved all her Blaxploitation films.  She had it going on, and still does, in my opinion, and didn't take any shit.  After reading her memoir, I see that she handled her personal life, much the way she handled characters in her movies.  I was very surprised to learn of her love interests in her personal life.  I won't reveal them here, but buy the book to learn all about them.

What I most respect about Pam is that she told things that needed to be said, but she did it in such a way that she didn't hurt innocent people.  This wasn't your typical tell-all type of book.  Miss Grier was very respectful and took care in the way she relayed her life to her reading audience and I applaud her for doing so.  She's just a class act all the way.  I have so much love for her.  And she looks great for her age.  May I be so fortunate. (smile)

Third Up, the legendary Rick James.  Oooh my, where do I even begin with this book.  Let me just say that Rick did a great job writing this book on his own without using a professional writer to help polish it.  He wrote his memoirs while in jail, and I must say, the stories he tells in this book were juicy.  But what I found most captivating about his life story is the way Rick became to be "I'm Rick James, bitch!"  That's a classic line that was later used in David Chappelle's comedy show on Comedy Central, but the truth is, Rick had a presence on stage and off, like no other artist.

He kept it real with his reading audience and didn't sugarcoat any of his experiences, and more importantly, he acknowledged his own guilt and responsibility in his actions and I have to give him major kudos for that.  I felt as though I got a contact just from reading the pages, because Rick was heavily, (make no mistake) heavily into drugs, and he outlines it here, word for word, not missing one single letter.  (chuckle).  It was nice learning about his family and seeing his serious side, which seldom he revealed to most, as he states in his own words.  He definitely lets the reader know just how he felt toward his record labels, famous recording artists who also enjoyed the taste of cocaine, and his one and only truly love~~music.  I read this book in two days~~could NOT put it down.  There will never be another Rick James, and we're blessed to still have his music.  He's truly a legend in every respect!

Fourth Up, Faith Evans.  I have to admit, I was never a huge fan of Faith's music, and most of my friends think I'm nuts because of that, but I am just being honest.  Although she has a beautiful voice and is super talented, I could never feel her music, the way most of her fans do.  But, I have to say, I changed my opinion, after having read her memoirs.  What hasn't Faith gone through is what you should be asking yourself?  From growing up without a father present, to a mother that never really showed her any love, Faith truly was certainly named appropriately.  She has lots of faith, and it shows.

When she got to the chapter about her deceased famous husband, Rapper, Notorious B.I.G., I cried actual tears.  I felt her pain, and it's funny how the media portrays one image, and how Faith told it like it was.  Friends she had in the industry, or so she thought, weren't quite the friends she thought she had, and those that she least expected to be in her corner, came through as guardian angels.  After I read this book, I began listening to Faith's music, and I'm happy to say, I like some of it.  I'm still not a big fan, but I like this lady, even without knowing her personally, but I like the way she takes care of business, and looking out for her children.  This was an outstanding read.  I give it five stars.

Fifth Up, my main man, Ice-T (a/k/a Tracy Marrow).  This is a brotha that will never lead you astray.  If I had to pick one celebrity I would want in my corner on my ranks coming up in the Hollywood scene, I can think of none other than Ice-T.  Straight from the mild streets of New Jersey, forced to grow up on the West coast, he's a man that has it all, but it took many years for him to get there.  He's a true O.G., totally old school, when rapping had real feeling and real truth.

Ice details his life from being a full-time thief, a Crip for life, and how it lead him down the road to recording rap music.  I remember his first major film role in New Jack City.  He was so believable, and I suppose so, having seen the street life up close and personal.  But how ironic he'd play a police officer~~the total opposite of what he portrayed in his real life.  And to go from all of which he came to being one of my favorite characters on Dick Wolf's Law and Order, Special Victims Unit.  He's Superfly and Shaft all rolled up into one.  He's one bad motha shut your mouth.  Awesome read!

Sixth Up, the Sophisticated Lady, herself, Ms. Natalie Cole.  Truth be told, I thought this was going to be a story about her life as a singer, but I couldn't have been more wrong.  Once I learned of what this story was about, I was elated.  Natalie, as most know, is the daughter, of the late, Nat King Cole, and she is so much more than just her voice and being the daughter of a famous father.  We almost lost Natalie to Hepatitis, and due to the love of her sister, Cooke, and another special sister, that assisted in giving her life again.  I don't want to spoil it, but you must read this incredible story.  It's a very short book and can probably be read within a couple hours.

I've always been a fan of her music, and will continue to be.  Her book is so appropriately named, "Love Brought Me Back!"  After you read it, I'm sure you will agree that it is a heart-filled story about a woman who has seen her share of ups and downs.  As Natalie so eloquently states, "God is so Good!"  Amen.

Mello and June
Seventh Up, from the author who never sleeps, yours truly, Kimberly Ranee Hicks.  Of course, you couldn't possibly think I'd push other books, and not my own.  I've got to toot my horn sometimes (beep, beep)!  This is a love story that stands the test of time.  How many people can actually say they've had a love affair that lasted over 50 years?  Well, Mello and June can most certainly say that because they've lived it.  As you read the musical Song Chapters, it jet bolts you to the next level of their stormy relationship.  From make-ups and break-ups, marriage, children, divorce, traumatic experiences and loss.

Mello is a man who knows exactly what he wants and how to get it through sexual manipulation.  June is a naive teen who knows where she wants to go in life, but has a few stumbling blocks to get over.  When the two of them meet for the first time, it most certainly isn't love at first sight.  Some of the musical chapters include, The Isley Brothers For The Love of You, Rick James Jefferson Ball, and Patti Labelle's I Don't Go Shopping.  If you love reading erotica true romance, then Mello and June is a must read! (Click on link below cover to purchase).

Silent Knight
Last, but certainly not least, another great story from the author who never sleeps, Kimberly Ranee Hicks, Silent Knight.  This urban, 70s mystery/suspense is sure to take you back down memory lane, when Afros, belle bottom pants and free love was all the rave.  Since we were all children at one time, this book is great to read because the children in this story have some tales to tell, and the one with the most to lose, or possibly gain, is the main character, Clarence Knight, the now film maker.  He's worked with the best in Hollywood, such as Will Smith and director/film maker, Spike Lee.

Clarence wants to believe that all things are good, but it isn't until he returns home, unwillingly, to see his best friend Reggie Dunn, Jr., that everything in Clarence's world gets turned upside down.  Everything as he once knew it to be, turns out to be the exact opposite, and there are deep and dark secrets waiting to become unraveled in the fast-pace suspense novel.  Just when you thought you knew someone, your whole world becomes undone.  If you love taking a trip down memory lane, this is the book for you.  (Click on link below cover to purchase).

So Fans, these are the latest books I've read, and I hope you pick up your copies today.  I love hearing from you, so please stop by and leave a comment on your good reads, and share with the rest of us.  Until next time, Love, Peace, and Write ON! Readers!

To 'P' or NOT to 'P'

Hello Fans:

Which do you choose?  Paper or Plastic?  CD or Download?  PC or Mac?  Laptop or Tablet?  Landline Phone or Cell?  HD or Blue-Ray?  Xfinity or Fios?  Decisions, Decisions, Decisions, and yet, with each decision, technology is constantly evolving and changing the way we conduct our daily lives, and not only that, as we continue to grow, technology has a way of killing whole industries, while creating new ones.  All of this stuff was designed to make our lives better.  Hmmm, I don't know about you, but I find technology has robbed me of my time, and before you know it, you're on 20 social media sites and spending at least 16 hours (combined Saturday and Sunday) trying to connect with each one, and contacting fans and friends alike, but somehow, this is supposed to be better for us~~I'm pulling my hair and gritting my teeth, lovingly!  (smile).

One question I deliberately left out is To Publish or NOT to Publish~~That is the question?  Traditional Publishing or Self-Publishing?  Hmmm, where does one begin?  How do you go about it?  How much is this going to cost?  Is it worth my time and energy?  Believe me when I tell you I have asked myself that question a million times, and no matter how many times I ponder on that, I come back to the same answer~~a resounding YES!  It's yes to self-publishing because it opened a door for me that might otherwise have remained closed for many, many years.  There are pros and cons to everything you do in life, and publishing is definitely no different.  You cannot make this decision lightly because there are dollars at stake and your precious time.  So I decided to finally live out my dream, and with it came a few nightmares.

In order to get to the next level, in whatever stage of life you are, you have to set goals for yourself.  Remember when you were in school and your teachers would ask, "so where do you see yourself in five years?"  The funny thing is my answer was always the same.  Being a novelist, but actually, I take that back, for many years, I aspired to be a journalist.  I love journalism.  But, things happened, my life's vehicle drove me down different paths, and so on and so forth, and that didn't happen; however, I never gave up that I would one day steer myself to the point where I am right now.  So. . .my vehicle has parked here!  And I had no idea just how much being an author was really going to change my life.

Being an author is definitely not easy.  I repeat, being an author is not easy!  Sitting down and writing these very words flow effortlessly for me, or so it would appear to you, the reader, but actually, I've deleted and rewritten about ten times trying to figure out how to introduce this latest blog post.  I've now been on my laptop for over two hours, (four and a half now, to be exact), and I haven't answered emails yet.  My mom always told me to be careful what you wish for, and I'm really beginning to see exactly what she means, (as I chuckle to myself).  My family and friends invite me to events and ask to hang out and let's go to dinner, and that whole thing, but I don't have time~~seriously, I truly don't.  Often times I find myself feeling guilty because people may think I'm being mean or rude, but that couldn't be further from the truth.  My laptop is my lifeline for my manuscripts and for contacting fans who want to hear from me, and they can be pretty damn demanding sometimes.  It gets really crazy.  Trust me, you don't know the half!

But, this is what I dreamed of.  This is what I wanted all of my life, and slowly but surely, it's happening~~FINALLY!  I'm gaining recognition for my work by my peers and fellow authors, and that is the most rewarding feeling.  I have arrived (on a small scale), but arrive nonetheless, and I'm thankful~~truly!  God has been good to me, and I'm humble.  So, are you still thinking about publishing?  When you self-publish, please don't misunderstand what those two little words mean.  SELF and PUBLISH!  YOU are doing it ALL!  YOU produce upfront money to get your book published.  YOU are your own agent!  YOU are the promoter and marketer!  YOU pay for the look of your book.  YOU pay to advertise your book.  YOU are the cheerleader on the sidelines getting the reading audience pumped up about your book.  It's all You!  And if you think that's easy, God love ya!

Truth is, it's hard as hell, and I'm not sugarcoating this for you.  I'm not trying to discourage you from your dreams, but I want YOU to really know what it is you are asking for, when you say YOU want to SELF publish a book!  That is why, if you just want to see your words in print to give to family and friends, then you don't have to invest in marketing, but if you think you're going to build a career out of writing~~well. . . good luck with that~~and I mean that sincerely.  There are millions~~I REPEAT millions of self-published authors you are in competition with, who again, have that same dream all of us writers have~~to be that next best-selling author~~to blow up~~to go viral.  Again, I wish you the best, because it takes time, patience and it takes lots and lots and lots and lots of money!  I did say lots of money!  Okay, you feel me now.

So. . .future self-publishing authors, to make life just a little easier for you, I'm going to post the top 14 self-publishing companies for you to review and decide which is best for you.  Remember, my post started out with questions and decisions, and here's more for you to think over.

These self-publishing companies can range as low as $99.00 of upwards $30,000.00 and more.  Yes, I'm not kidding you, there are some SP's that can charge you higher than that, depending on how much YOU plan to market yourself, or depending on the publishing plan you choose.  They will give you the stars, moon and the sun, but remember, YOU will pay the price for them!  No joke!  Nothing, that is, not much is free!  Keep that in mind!

I'm not sure if these links are still good, but as I have advised in previous posts, YOU must do your homework.  So, I've listed the ones here that most of my author friends use, and also, are rated among the best of the best.  There are hundreds of self-publishing companies out there, and it's your job to find out which ones are best suited for you, and your wallet.

So, remember, future authors, it's wonderful to have the writing dream, but it is so very important that you really THINK about all that comes along with that dream.  As I stated, there will be a few nightmares along the way, but if it's truly what you want to do, then you must go for it.  At the end of the day, it's worth it to me.  I'm not wealthy, yet, and I still must work a 9 to 5, but I'm living what I have said I was all of my life, and that's a writer.  I welcome the challenges and embrace the ups and downs of being a self-published author, and as one of my fans once asked me, "do you regret doing it?"  The answer is No!  If I had it to do all over again, I'd do everything the same.

Until next weekend, Peace, Love and Write ON! Writers. . .

I'm RETRO TRiPPin'. . .

Slide me some skin, bloods!  Are you hip to the facts?  What Up. . .You Jive Turkeys!  Betta Dig ya'self!  How yall cool cats feelin' today?  We're taking a walk back down memory lane where afros, tube tops, belle bottom pants and platform shoes were in.  Strobe lights and disco balls were a twirlin'!  Do you feel the trip, yet?  Free Love, peace and right on were the slang and movement of the 70s!
Courtesy of Philadelphia Weekly

Do you remember where you were on a Saturday afternoon in the 70s?  I know where I was~~right in front of the boob tube watching Soul Train.  When I'd see that cartoon train and hear the famous theme "It's the Sooooooooul Train!"  I was full of anticipation an excitement.  I couldn't wait for the Soul Train scrambler~~and it would tickle me when some of the couples couldn't make out who the musical guest was.  It was so obvious, usually, or maybe it was just me.  It was so fun when Don Corneilus would announce the musical guest for the week.  Anybody, who was anybody, wanted to be on Soul Train.  This show made a lot of musical careers.  I was dancing right along with the Soul Train dancers.  They wore the hippest clothes and performed the hottest dances in the Soul Train line.  Simply Awesome!

From the Sanford & Son Official Website
You couldn't be a part of the 70s, if you didn't know about this show~~Sanford & Son.  I loved when Fred and Aunt Esther would get into it.  One of my favorite lines from Aunt Esther, as she speaks to her husband, Woody, "Woodrow, you came here with teeth. . .do you want to leave here with teeth?"  Or she'd say to Fred, "You betta watch it sucka," or "you ole fished-eyed fool!"  Fred would sometimes respond by saying, "shut up you ole ugly gorilla!"  She began swinging her purse at his head and body, like she was swatting at flies.  I would fall over laughing.  Television just doesn't make comedies like that anymore.

From Google Ad
My brother and I would go crazy each week waiting on this next 70s show that had all the kids anxious~~The Six Million Dollar Man.  I believe my brother had every T-shirt with Lee Majors on it.  Do you remember that mechanical sound his body would make when he would jump into action.  I wish I could duplicate the sound, but if you've never seen the show, check 'em out on DVD, and I guarantee you, you'll know it as soon as you hear it.  My brother and I cheered when he would fight the Sasquatch!  Amazing energy!  Our hearts would be beating fast!  What happened to good quality programming?  Oooh that's right~~they've been replaced with stupid reality shows!  This was all the reality we needed!

How many of you sported an afro back in the day?  Remember the picks with a fist handle?  Or the pick handle that enclosed around the teeth~~ red and green~~that snapped into place?  You couldn't tell us nothing.  I can't tell you how many picks some of my friends used to go through.  What I most remember is guys who would bury their pick in their Afro and pull it out, from time to time, when it needed to be reshaped again.  What a hairdo!  And I have you know, afros have made a comeback, but they still aren't like they were in the 70s.

Whether you were around in the 70s or not, this is still my favorite era.  My favorite shows were The Jeffersons and Chico and The Man~~but my all-time favorite was Good Times.  I loved to sing the theme song.  Here's a little phrase, "Keepin' your head above water. . .makin' a way when you can. . .temporary layoffs, GOOD TIMES. . .easy credit rip offs. . .GOOD TIMES. . .scratchin' and survivin'. . .GOOD TIMES. . .hangin' in a chow line. . .GOOD TIMES. . .ain't we lucky we got 'em. . .GOOD TIMES!"

I tell ya, the 70s were good times, and often times I find myself wishing I was back there because I just don't like the direction our world is in now.  I hope you enjoyed this retro trip, and I'd love to hear from you and your experiences of the 70s.

Clarence Knight and his crew definitely were children of the 70s, and what an incredible story they have to share with you.  So, if you're looking for some great summer reading, and would love to take more retro trips back to the 70s, get your copy of SILENT KNIGHT

Until next time, keep on truckin', yall!

Hate Me Now. . .

HELLO FANS:

I've taken a much needed break from my own writing, and now catching up on my reading.  I've gone through quite a few books in the last few weeks, and anyone that knows me well will tell you that I love to read memoirs and biographies.

I enjoy reading about why famous people became the 'people' we know and love today.  What paths did they choose and why?  What adversities did they have to overcome and how do they feel about their fame and fortune?  Most people treat celebrities like they are a different kind of human.  As if what we, the unknown folk experience, is somehow different than those who are celebrities, and this is a huge, and I do mean huge, misconception.

In fact, celebrities are human too.  They go through the same crap that we do, with the exception that they are known more publicly than we are.  Some people act as though they have a personal connection to their favorite celebrities, when in fact they don't know them from Adam.

They love, hurt, cry, get angry, eat, go to the bathroom, pay bills, drive, have family, experience death of loved ones, put on clothes, etc., just like we do, but when you're in the public eye, everything you do is under a microscope.  Well, I, in no means feel as though I'm a celebrity yet, but I have become more known, and it shocks me sometimes when people I do not know contact me and ask me the very questions that I often wondered about entertainers I enjoy.

Which brings me to a topic that has been coming up more and more as I meet other authors, and that's how our lives have changed since we've become published authors.  For the most part, many of us go through the same things because we're independent authors.  The world of publishing changes faster than the wind blows and it's almost mind boggling to try and keep up with it, but keep up we must to survive in the literary jungle.

One of the biggest changes for me has been how those that I know personally changed toward me, since I've become an author.  The very people that I thought would be in my corner, exited my life like roaches run and take cover when someone puts a light on.  To say I was surprised is an understatement.  People who said they would assist me and support me ran from me as if their life depended on it.

For the longest time I tried to figure out why this was?  I asked myself did I do something to these individuals to make them angry?  Did I say something I shouldn't have said?  Did I zig when I should have zagged?  I didn't know what the deal was.  It wasn't until I started reaching out to other indie authors who told me they experienced the same thing.  I didn't feel so bad after hearing some of their stories.

The bottom line, I guess, is people hate on us because of what we do.  Are you laughing?  If not, you should be because that is the most ridiculous statement for me to write, but the truth is, we are hated by some, and thank God not all, or we'd never get anywhere.

So let me get this straight.  Some people have cast me aside because I wrote Mello and June.  I had several people say to me, "wow, you were really serious about this writing thing, huh?"  Aaah, yeah, why wouldn't I be?  And then when I wrote Silent Knight I lost more supposed friends from my life.  And to learn that other indie authors were experiencing the same thing made me begin to search for the answers.

I think I finally figured this out.  Some people hate what I do because I dared to dream, dared to put my dream into action, dared to put a marketing plan together, dared to be me and do me, dared to live out my dream and dared to continue to do what I do, which is write.  So for those reasons, some hate me!

Once I realized that I had done nothing more than be a self-motivator, an entrepreneur, a woman with a purpose and plan, I chuckled to myself.  How sad it must be for some people who never know what they want to do in life, or better yet, never get the nerve to just go out on a limb and try to live up to the dreams in which they may possess.

With my small celebrity status, I've gained a lot of fans.  I've been offered assistance from people I never met, but want to see me prosper, and, more importantly, don't want anything from me in return.  And the saddest part for me is, much of my help doesn't come from my own race of people.  In fact, the majority of my fans are not African-American.

I recently had a conversation with another author friend of mine who stated the same thing.  Why is it that our own people do not support what we do?  Why do many of our people hate on us because we're doing what we love to do?  Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for each and every fan I have regardless of their color or background, but it would be nice to be supported by people within my race, but many of them are often too caught up in their own self-hate to feel proud of other minorities.

If I were to vary from the type of stories I write to be more geared toward a white reading audience, then I'd be accused of being a "sell-out!"  Much like Oprah Winfrey has been accused of being.  To me, what Oprah has done is cater to where the money is and caters to the viewing audience that helped put her on the map, and unfortunately, that's not the African-American community.  Many in our viewing audience criticize her for being "too white" and doing shows that don't relate to a black audience.  Hmm, and some wonder why?  If she were to wait on African-Americans, she wouldn't be owning her own network now.  She's a brilliant mastermind, and I should hope to be so blessed with her business savvy and guts!
Rapper Nas
When I thought about writing this blog post, one of my favorite rappers came to mind, Nas.  He wrote a rap entitled, Hate Me Now!  "You can hate me now. . .cause I won't stop now. . .cause I can't stop now, YOU can hate me now-oow!"  When I first heard that years ago, it became my anthem of sorts because it's so true.  He basically was stating to those African-Americans that hate on him for being a rapper, and living well and having money, go ahead and hate on him because no matter what, he's going to continue to do what he do!  What kills me is that many of us wonder why we never get anywhere as a people!~~You must first stop this damn hating, that could be a starting point!

So, with that, I say, hate me now, tomorrow and in the future, cause I will never stop!  To all my minority indie authors feeling a little down because some of your own people hate on you for doing what you love, keep it movin' and Write ON! writers.  Don't ever stop doing what you do!
