Stupidity for DUMMIES!

Hello Fans:

I'm sorry I missed last Saturday's post and it was brought to my attention, so I realize more than ever, that some of you are definitely paying attention, so thanks for asking what happened last weekend.  I haven't been feeling writer-ready and was in a very dark place for a minute, and I did not want to bring too much of my negativity to my readers.  So this weekend's post is going to be a good one.

I've noticed a very devastating trend sweeping our nation and our world as a whole.  There isn't a Hollywood director alive who could produce this frightening, yet engaging monster that I'm speaking of.  You've seen it lurking around you at work, at home, while traveling out on the road, in stores, on television, in the movies, etc.  In fact, this monster plagues every aspect of your life, and although you shake it off and wonder, is it just me, you forge ahead with your life.

This monster has a name.  It's called Ignorance!  Although Hollywood does manage to produce some of the most ignorant movies known to man, what bothers me is that this thing is everywhere.  I'm not sure how many of you have ever seen Jay-Walking on The Tonight Show.  Jay makes light of how stupid and ignorant people are with the most simplest of things.  He once asked some viewers on the street, "who's buried in Grant's tomb?"  And the answers he received blew my mind and made for some great laughter, but it got me to thinking, this really isn't funny.

Recently, I was speaking with a group of young people, let's say in age from 19 to 22, and the topic of discussion was about our local government.  I quickly learned that these youngsters had no idea who the mayor was of their city, they couldn't tell me the Governor's name of Pennsylvania, and some weren't even sure of what county they actually lived in.  Umm, something is seriously wrong here!  But they could tell me Chris Brown is coming to town with his tour.  They could tell me all about the drama on Basketball Wives, and they knew all the latest talk on Facebook and Twitter, but they couldn't tell me anything of value regarding their everyday lives in our own state.  Wow!

A good friend of mine told me she used to work with a woman who thought the human organs could grow back, if you lost one due to illness or if you donated an organ to a friend or loved one.  Really?  I grew up with a girl who thought the yeast infection she had was her period, and had the nerve to wear a pad because she said the smell was bad.  Oh my!!  I heard of another horrific story wherein a woman was going to give birth and she was terrified, not for the sake of going through the motions, but the fact that she had no idea which hole the baby was going to come out of!  Ummph, ummph, ummph!  Are you getting my point here!

You've all watched the news where the reporter is investigating a story, and they decide to talk to the spectators out on the street.  And instead of the reporter seeking out the people who can speak and sound the most intelligent, they always seem to gravitate toward the most ignorant person.  You sit there and go, wasn't there anyone else they could have asked?  What about a person being interviewed who considers themselves speaking intelligently, and using words in the wrong context and sounding more like an ignorant fool?

Have you been to the bakery lately?  God forbid you ask for a baker's dozen!  The store may have to close down due to the clerk not knowing what the hell you just asked for.  I overheard some people conversing on the bus years ago, wherein one young lady was saying to another that her and her boyfriend was getting bucked naked!  Umm, funny, cause I always thought that was called butt naked, but maybe it's just me.  Or how about you're in a restaurant and you hear someone order schrimp.  Not sure what this most sought after creature of the fish family is?  Yeah, that would be shrimp.  Never knew shrimp had a "c" in it!  But apparently it grew a letter over my lifetime.

As much as it pains me to say this but I never thought I'd run into so many people who are just downright ignorant about their bodies, politics, lives, and food.  I'm certainly no Einstein, but damn it, I'm not a Baby Huey type dumb either!  To not know the basics about how the human body is constructed nor its functions, is sad, just plain sad.  And the saddest part of it all is, this monster doesn't discriminate against age.  There are some old school folks out here just as dumb and ignorant.  You deal with this monster each and every day of your life, and maybe you've become oblivious to it, but I seem to get a headache trying to make sense out of why are so many people uneducated?

Which brings me to a discussion I got into with a group of people on Facebook.  Basically, it was a question asking who's responsibility is it to educate our children, and needless to say, I was alone in my answers, but I held my own.

To put it simply, I stated that a child's first teachers are its parents.  A child's first role model is its parents.  By the time your child reaches school age, they should already know the basics of what they need to know and then it is the teachers job to reinforce what you have already taught your child(ren).  But I was met with some strong opposition to this.  There were many who commented that it's the teachers job to educate our children (which I do not dispute), and how many of these commentators gave props to their teachers for a job well done.

Don't get me wrong, I have some teachers who were my favorites too, but if I'm being real, which is what I pride myself on, my parents were my teachers and role models, and I give the praise to them!  Granted, I had excellent teachers and I thank them for the education I received, but I was born to my parents, not my teachers, so by the time I was ready for Kindergarten, I was ahead of my class already!  I could read, write, knew my colors and numbers, and I'm finding many young children don't know these things at all, and then the parents expect the educators to perform miracles and some get downright irate when their Little Johnny's and Suzie's aren't doing so well.  Aaah, parents, what the hell were you doing?  So, quite naturally when I posted my comments on how I felt about this, I felt as though I immediately came under attack.

What I found most interesting is that most of the comments came from people whose parents didn't home school them first.  So I was striking a cord with many.  But what really got me is another discussion I was involved in regarding education wherein a parent told me that it's the communities responsibility (as a whole) to educate our children.  Well, folks, you know me.  That most definitely wasn't going to fly.  First off, you didn't invite me to the party when you were conceiving your child, so continue to treat me as an uninvited guest.  I'm not down with this whole 'village' mentality.  I don't mind helping anyone, but to tell me it's my "responsibility" to take care of your child or children, I got a HUGE problem with that!  It is your responsibility, as a parent, to ensure that your child(ren) receives the most out of education as they most possibly can, that's not my responsibility.  And to take my realism further, I don't have any children, so I don't feel I bear any responsibility to these parents, nor their children.  If I so choose to help a person out (which I have done), that's my prerogative, but don't tell me what I must do, because again, you didn't invite me to be apart of making those children, so I say continue to keep me outta that loop!

At the end of the day, I'm really tired of people pointing the finger at me and people like me who feel the way we do!  I chose not to have children and that was my right, just as much as it was your right to have the child(ren) you have.  But to tell the community we have a moral obligation/responsibility to help you educate your child(ren), I don't agree with that and I never will.

There's no secret that I don't like the world we live in today!  In fact, I absolutely despise what this world has become, but I have learned to deal with it as best I can.  Ignorance plagues our lives day in and day out, and I ask the question, who's responsibility is that?

Until next weekend, Use the Internet for Its Intended Purpose. . .Educate yourselves, and Crack Open a Book and Read!  There's a world of information out there at your fingertips, so there ARE no excuses!

iRobot. . .

Compliments of Felixco, Inc.
She was created solely to obey her orders.   There wasn't any room for hope, dreams, happiness or faith~~just do what everyone else wants her to do, and the world would revolve just fine.  She had no direction, except for what was created for her by others.   It was decided in her early stages that she must go to school and learn, regardless if this was what she wanted or not.  The rules she followed were made up by some unforeseen force, but one that everyone lived by, so she was told by her creator, so should she.

She wasn't permitted to ask questions, just follow what was designed for her to do, and so she did.  Come graduation day, she was given the highest honors, and she had the audacity to think that this was now her time to do with whatever her heart desired, but no, that wasn't the case!  She had more education to receive that was tougher than the first twelve years she just completed.  The rules state that the more education you have, the better career or job you may get, and so she hesitated and questioned this to herself, but she did as she was required~~dare not ask aloud!

Compliments of Anankkml
Finally, she completed her four years of additional schooling, so now was the time that she could do what she really wanted to do, but, yet again, her creator said, "no, you must work to earn your keep."  Why hadn't she done enough by educating herself?  What was the point to all of this, if she could not live out her true passion?  When she grew tired and angry that she couldn't live out her dreams, she asked her creator why?

Only to be told you don't ask these questions, you just get a job to help support yourself because your passions won't pay the bills, only a real 9 to 5 job will do that.  These are the rules and this is what everyone must do in order to survive, and why should you be any different.  Never ask why, just do!  Reluctantly, she found a job she didn't like, but because this is what everyone must do, she went along unhappily, I might add.

Compliments of Salvatore Vuono
For thirty years, she worked in an electronics factory creating more people like herself.  They were all zombies working the assembly line creating the latest technology.  Luckily, all that education afforded her the honors of being the boss, so she could oversee the workers, and despite how happy this made her creator, she lacked the drive and passion to do what she did for a living because it wasn't really what she wanted to do.

Time was passing her by quickly.  She wondered just when would she be able to do all the things she wanted to do instead of doing what everyone expected her to do?  When does that day ever come?  She must have asked that question out loud and one of her employees answered her.  "I used to dream of being a singer, but that dream quickly diminished when I had my first child.  After that, I figured, ok, maybe I can get back into singing, but my husband wouldn't afford me the courtesy.  He told me I have a family to see about, and the life we lived wasn't so bad.  So, here I am, almost ready to retire, and I sing to myself sometimes, and I moonlight at a bar and sometimes I'll sing there, but that's as close as I came to living out my dreams.  It wasn't in the cards for me I suppose."

That response didn't help her, it just made her sad.  Just knowing that she may not ever get to do what she wanted to do in this life frightened her more than she imagined.  How can that be?  This time around, she decided to make some drastic changes in her life and start doing what she wanted to do and to hell with what everyone else wanted.

Compliments of Luigi Diamanti
Well those set of balls she grew became shortlived when she discovered she had responsibility to the company she worked for and to her employees.  How could she just walk away, when so many people depended upon her?  Perhaps if she killed herself maybe then she'd get to do what she wanted to do?  But then she thought that would be dreadfully selfish of her.  She placed her face in her hands and balled like a baby.  Here she grew old never having lived out her dreams, but punching that clock day after day still.  There were places she wanted to go, people she wanted to meet, and now it was too late.

She was tired and her body began to rebel against her because she was old.  Her nuts and bolts had damn there run out of oil, and time had all but run out.  It was at this very moment she realized she wasn't human, she was nothing more than a robot.  She did exactly what she was programmed for, but she never did what she wanted to do.  The questions she was left with now haunted her like a bad nightmare.  All she ever wanted to do was be free to be herself and follow her passions, which was to travel.  She'd been around the globe through books, as her imagination took her places she was eager to see, but when you're a programmed robot, the only thing you can do is what you were made to do.

How much of a Robot have you become?  Until next weekend. . .

A Love Story

Hello Fans,

Who doesn't enjoy a great romance?  Well, if you've never had a great love in your life, that's truly unfortunate, because there's nothing better than to be with the one you love and who loves you back equally.

I've been fortunate to have had a few great loves in my life.  I consider myself lucky for finding my husband, who is the love of my life, but before I met the right man for me, I went through some things~~who hasn't?

I hope you enjoy this short love story.  I'd be interested to see if you really get its meaning?

A LOVE STORY. . .THE FOUR SEASONS
WINTER
SCENE I – MEDITATION

The sharp crisp air shoots straight through my bones
The cold becomes my comforter to claim for my very own
I hold out my tongue to catch a snowflake
Winter is preparing me for Autumn’s mistakes

This is the season to think; my temporary hibernation
Gathering materials for Spring; when it’s time, flowers celebration
Right now I must cling to Winter; my season will come
Got to use Winter’s time wisely and settle for being numb

With the sprinkling little snowflakes that unite like a field of gems
As I imagine Old Man Winter blowing the cold wind, I can almost see him
The only sign of life is knowing that I exist
Place my warm hands in the snow, slowly melts through, I cannot resist

SPRING

SCENE II – AWAKENING

Spring’s alarm clock awakens me; listen to the music of the birds
As my feathered friends take the cue from their conductor, while they sing Spring’s unsung words
The smell of jasmine fills the air along with the daffodils
I am the master of this canvas, with nature’s brush, the paint to spill
Winter’s meditation is not forgotten, I have had much needed rest
With the beauty of Spring’s painted picture, I have lived my best
As I look at the vibrancy of the rich colors of the flowers
It fills my soul with the energy it needs; I’m fueled by its power

Spring’s rain water soaks the soil and makes mother earth rich
Like a seamstress with material, made for Spring’s coat, the needle to stitch
Captivated by this gift, for my body takes notice and begins to rise
A force I’m reckoned to reason with; the flame of my soul I have seen with my eyes

SUMMER
SCENE III – I HAVE ARRIVED

The delicate nature of children’s laughter moves me to thrive
Summer is here and that’s how I know I have arrived
Green grass neatly mowed; it becomes my magic carpet
With the meditation of Winter, the awakening of Spring, Summer is food from market

Hear the sound deep down in my belly; the roar that Summer makes
Waiting on you, I have grown quite weary, no matter how long it takes
No time to waste on arguing, your heart beams of great sunlight
A warm comfortable glow caresses my skin; our love is for the night

With the heat of your sun, Summer casts a spell on me
As the sweat rolls down my body, it lets me know that I am free
To run through the valley and streams drenched with your Summer’s love
Summer is rising, I have arrived to peak, your blue sky from up above

FALL

SCENE IV –  ROCK STEADY

Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall
I have lived through the changes of it all
The things I’ve learned have made me wise
Fall is mimicking another season; do you recognize the disguise?

As I rock steady to hold onto the year
Not only do the leaves fall, but look at my salty watered tears
In the still of the night, I toss and turn, reaching out to you
But my seasons have come and gone, for I am not bitter, my experience grew

My leaves collect outside my door; life is beginning to die
Time forces me to hurry and embrace Winter’s coat, as the Autumn night asks why?
Meditation, awakening, I have arrived and rock steady have given me enough reasons
I have no regret, I’m glad to have known you, even if for a moment, I would not change my four seasons

Word UP!

Hello Fans:

You do realize that the majority of movies you've seen come directly from books.  One thing I always make sure to do is read the book first, and then see the movie.  Why, you ask?  Because the books are always better.  There are details and intricate parts of the storyline that often times Hollywood neglects or the director puts his/her own spin to the story, and usually they miss the mark.  Due to the fact I'm a lover of books, I feel the writer wrote their words in the way they were intended, and no one should mess with perfection.  Here are some of my favorite books that turned into box office hits, but personally, I still feel the book was waaaay better!  These books outlined here will be judged on a five-star rating, and their movies will also be judged on that same system.

First up, my all-time favorite author, Thomas Harris.  This book started it all for the infamous serial killer, Hannibal.  Many people feel that Hannibal is a horrible person, but I never viewed the character that way.  To me, he is a necessary evil and, more importantly, Hannibal only killed those that truly deserved it.  Much like a character I grew to love named Dexter.  A series that ran on Showtime.  I know we aren't supposed to love people like the Hannibal's of the world, but if you read the entire series, you may change your mind about him.

There are two movie versions of Red Dragon that I know of.  The second version was a little better than the first, but ultimately, for me, it was the book that won me over.  And who could forget Silence of the Lamb, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.  Every book just prepared you for the next, and Thomas' shear brilliance in making his readers wait years in between the next book, just added more to the mystique and flare of Hannibal.  I finally know why Hannibal is the person we came to know.  This book and all of Thomas' others are well written.  This is why Mr. Harris is my favorite author.  One of the most prolific, outside of Dick Wolf, who writes all the Law and Order series.  Another brilliant writer.  Book ***** / 1st Movie *** / 2nd Movie ****
Second up, is now my all-time favorite book, running very close to my favorite classic, To Kill a Mocking Bird.  I never thought I'd read a book that would change my view on TKaMB, but after reading Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, I've met my match.  I read this about seven years ago, sitting on my porch in the summertime.  I read it in one day.  Sue did something that most writers strive to do, but sometimes miss the mark, and that is, hook you from the very first sentence.  This book starts out with a murder, and when you discover who it was that did the actual killing, that's when your jaw drops.  Of course, once I read the first line, I had to keep on going, and this book sent me into a multitude of emotions.

I immediately felt anger, happiness, sadness, and perseverance from the first paragraph.  If you saw the movie, but didn't read the book, do yourself a favor and read it.  Trust me, although the movie was great, there are still some details that were missed.   Book ***** / Movie *****

Third up, Alice Walker's classic, The Color Purple.  I believe just about everybody has seen the movie, and this was the first rule I ever broke about reading the book before seeing it on film.  It was so critically acclaimed, which after having seen it, deserved every bit of the titles it earned, but reading the book was still better.  Because of breaking my rule, I had the images of Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey in mind, but I tried hard to let Alice's descriptive techniques create my own images, and you know what I found out, they picked the right actors to play the parts.  (I suppose the joke was on me this time).

If you're a Tyler Perry fan, you'll notice that he, too, is a huge fan of The Color Purple.  He uses a lot of the lines from the book in his plays.  I always smile when I recognize the dialogue.  The movie should have won best picture, but didn't.  In fact, the movie was the most nominated in 1985, but didn't win a single award.  The only win the movie came away with was Whoopi Goldberg for Best Actress.   Definitely read the book, because you won't be sorry you did.  Book ***** / Movie *****

Fourth up, is The Five People You Meet in Heaven.  I pray when I leave this earth, that my Heaven is like the one that Mitch Albom so eloquently outlined.  I had to read this book for my book club about eight years ago, and I tell you, I probably would never have read it on my own, because I really didn't know much about this author, but boy am I glad I read it.  This book helped me deal with the loss of my grandmother, and it's just the way I imagine my grandparents spending their lives in the afterlife.  Mitch brought me closer to an understanding of the way I've always envisioned Heaven could be like, and for my soul's sake, I hope he's right.

Book ***** / Movie **

Here is an oldie, but goodie of my favorite memoir that wasn't a movie, but damn sure would make for an interesting movie experience.

When I first learned of J. L. King was on the Oprah Winfrey Show years ago.  I happened to be channel surfing and I was made to pause when I heard Oprah mention what would you do if you found out your man was cheating with another man?  Well, I just sat that old remote control down, and watched the whole hour, glued to my set with eyes and ears wide open.  I don't even know where to begin with this book.  Mr. King was a married man and lived with a terrible secret.  I don't know if saying a 'terrible' secret is a fair assessment, but nonetheless, he outlined, in great detail, his affairs with other men.  He brought out how many black men secretly sleep with other men, but they don't consider themselves gay.  Oookay, we've got ourselves a great read here!

Let's just say he put a whole new spin on the 'bromance' experience.  I mean to think your spouse or significant other is cheating is bad enough, but to think when your man tells you he's hanging out with his friends, only to learn you've caught a deadly disease because he's been out having unprotected sex, not with women, but men!  Whoa, I don't know about you, but that really made me think about a lot of things.  My mind was in a whirlwind, so the next day I went to the book store and read this book, and oh Lord am I glad I did.  That's not to say that all Black men or men in general do this, but it does make you wonder sometimes, at least I know he put it out there.  One of the reasons he wrote this book was to educate women about some of their men's secret lives, and also to bring more awareness to Aids among Black women.  Ladies, if you've never read this, you might want to check it out.  And that goes for men too.  Book *****

Until next weekend, Happy Reading, and Enjoy the Movies. . .for, if it weren't for us writers, you wouldn't have much movie going to do!  As for Hollywood, do yourselves a favor and stop disturbing greatness.  If you're going to make our books into major films, please leave it the way WE wrote it.  Just sayin'!!!!!!!
