BOOK REVIEW: Binds That Tie. . .

SYNOPSIS:

Maggie never felt as though she belonged until Chris Stevens showed her what true happiness meant. Ten years into their marriage, miscarriages and infidelities have scarred them both. Despite their perfect-couple image, Maggie can’t look at Chris with anything but resentment. When a charismatic stranger offers the opportunity for a little harmless flirtation, she jumps into the game.

But charm soon turns to malice, and a deadly split-second decision forces Maggie and Chris onto a dangerous path fraught with secrets, lies, and guilt. With no one else to turn to—no one she dares trust—Maggie will ultimately learn just how binding marital ties can be.

M & J'S REVIEW:

Wow! This was truly an amazing story. Usually, characters such as the ones depicted in this storyline would anger me beyond belief, but, for some reason, Kate managed to make these characters likable and for that I applaud her. If you’ve been married for a long time, this is a story that you will be able to relate to. Of course, in the beginning of Chris and Maggie’s marriage, the world was their oyster and all their hopes and dreams were reachable and believable because they were young, in love, and that’s just the way life goes, right? Sure it does, until life happens.

One day you look across your bed and discover the person sleeping next to you snoring heavily irritating the hell out of you is somehow different, or could it be that you’re the one who has changed? What you once found so cute about your spouse, all of a sudden you feel the sudden urge to kick his ass out of the bed. You don’t know why, but you just feel compelled and a strong sense of hating him. Where did the love go? Is the love gone? When did you start feeling this way? Both of you go about your daily lives as robotic as it gets, and yet you still feel something for your spouse, but you’re no longer sure what it is?!

So, since life has taken its course and it’s ten years past all the giddiness you once felt for your husband, you and your girlfriends hit the bar for a night out to let your hair down and forget about your jobs and spouses. A gorgeous guy is gawking at you from across the room, and immediately all the fire and desire you used to feel for your soul mate suddenly has you tingling with sensations you’ve all but forgotten. Shit, you’re ready to venture down a path you know is forbidden! Oh, damn, that’s right, there’s a piece of bling on your ring finger that forbids you to take up with someone else. Dare I say it, but you’re taken! Ooooooooooh Noooo—the horror of it all! Hmm, as tempting as it sounds, knowing your husband had an affair with his secretary a few years back, a little vengeance wouldn’t hurt? Who would ever know besides Maggie and the mystery man? Hell, your husband hasn’t paid attention to you in quite a few years, and after four miscarriages, what was left? The love was pretty much aborted the same as Maggie’s offspring. Chris says he still desires you and you’ve been going to counseling working on the trust issues he put your marriage in, but, now you’re faced with if you want him, so why is it all of a sudden Maggie finds herself so smitten with this alluring stranger?

He represented everything her husband was not. That’s the answer! He wasn’t her husband, but a good looking single young man, with a tight body and muscles for days ready to lay her and she was eager to be underneath him. She yearned for passion in her life again. She wanted to feel anything other than the sorrow of babies gone and a husband that claimed he loves her, but has an affair. Love should have brought his ass home, but Chris didn’t see the movie, Boomerang. Was Maggie to bear some of that blame? It’s been said before while you point the finger three are pointing back at you. Two wrongs don’t make it right, but gat damn it, it sure as hell would feel good. But the bling on her finger kept her honest, somewhat! They exchange numbers in their cell phones and just like her husband felt years before needing his Maggie to comfort him through the pain of losing their fourth child, she turned stone cold, so he sought warmth from a woman who was willing and definitely able—Maggie begins an emotional affair with the mystery man named, Logan May. Some say an emotional affair is even worse than a physical one because eventually one’s emotions are going to take over and it will be only a matter of time before the physical takes place.

Maggie soon discovers that the life she thought was so ho-hum and boring was just what she needed. The web she entangles herself and Chris in is so electrifying and exciting, you will NOT be able to put this book down. I was glued to every page and hated when I had to put it down for the night. Each chapter continues to build your suspense and you can’t wait to find out what is going to happen next. OMG, Maggie and Chris are like so many longstanding married couples. It’s not easy staying married to someone and even though you may love your spouse, life changes you. What you start out as is not the same as you will end up, which is why you have to give your spouse plenty of room to grow because everything changes. Question is, will you be able to weather the storm? That, folks, is what Chris and Maggie are faced with and as you read, the story continues to escalate taking you higher and higher. Get ready for the drama to unfold!

Kate did an amazing job in telling Maggie and Chris’s back story as well. You learn so much about these two characters and how what they’ve gone through binds them in the end. Oh, and I must say, the ending is one that most will likely not see coming. I had an inkling of a clue in the very beginning, but the author took me completely down a different path. Damn, this was truly a great book! Mello & June gives it five stars and more!
