A cross-country move wasn’t exactly what McKinley had in mind for her senior trip, but leave it to her parents to up and move to Rhode Island. Her senior year was supposed to be awesome, but when she ticks off popular cheerleader Taylor, it goes from bad to worse.

The only good thing about moving is the mysterious, Camaro-driving, all-around-likeable Nick Phelan. But that mysterious thing that makes him so likeable is also making McKinley suspicious.

Nick hides secrets. McKinley harbors doubts. Taylor bares her teeth. But dealing with moving and Taylor is nothing compared to the biggest secret of all.

Author Bio:

I grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I went to college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I suffered a bad case of culture shock that first year. But I survived and went on to earn my Bachelor's Degree in English. While at college, I met and married my husband, Steve, and then we relocated to Las Vegas. I have lived in Las Vegas ever since and love it! Except for the hot summers, so I'm really thankful for AC. We have added four children and a dog to our family.

I have wanted to write books since I was twelve years old. It's a good way to put my over-active imagination to use. Now that it's *ahem* many years later, my dream has come true and I am a published author. I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.

Excerpt:

He couldn't believe this nigga Jalen had pulled up right in front of him. He had his windows tinted, but his license place told it all. The driver sat there with a smile on his face as he read the license plate "KYNG" out loud. He had been looking everywhere for this nigga and he had fallen right into his lap. This nigga had killed his brother and he was going to pay. He was on his way in the club and decided to hit his blunt a few times, but when he noticed Jalen, he decided to wait on him. They sat there for a few minutes before Jalen finally got out the car, heading toward the door. He walked up to the bouncer, gave him some dap and walked right in while the spectator sat in the car, trying to figure out his next move.

Jalen, Bash and Rick were sitting in the VIP section of the club, taking a few shots of Cîroc. The club was doing numbers and Jalen didn't want to lose control, so he took it easy on the drinking. He sat back, taking in the scenery. Bash and Rick were having a good time and Jalen couldn't help but smile at them. He was searching the crowd when this chick caught his eye. He was thinking about going over there and introducing himself, but he already had enough going on. Jalen had a love for ladies and couldn't resist a beautiful woman. He's been with all kinds of woman and even though he was a playboy, he treated them all with respect. He just couldn't help the fact that he loved women. He got up and put on his jacket, "I'm about to get out of here," he said, grabbing his phone.

"What's wrong?" Bash asked.

"Nothing, I'm just not feeling this tonight. I got a lot going on and I need to be by myself." Jalen was ready to go, he couldn't stop thinking about his mom having cancer and started to fill guilty for not being there for her.

"Alright playboy, you know I'm always here if you need me."

"No doubt," he said, giving him some dap. He took one last sip out of his glass and headed toward the door.

Meanwhile the spectator had decided to stay in the car and wait on Jalen to come out. He didn't want to take a chance on losing him again; he had waited eight years for this moment. He had practically moved to Boston trying to find Jalen and it was as if he lived somewhere else or never came outside, so he wasn't expecting to see him tonight. He had been waiting for an hour when he saw him walking up to his car. He looked at the time and it was only 1: 15, Jalen was leaving early. He got out the car and stood in the shadows. He had gone home and changed into all black so people wouldn't notice him. He stood at the back of Jalen's car and as he went to open the door, he was greeted by a round of bullets piercing his body. Jalen went down as the spectator grabbed his watch for a souvenir, jumped in his car and faded into traffic as if nothing happened. He went to where he was staying, grabbed a few things and headed back home to Texas.

People were standing outside when they heard the gunshots and ran over towards Jalen car, but it was too late. Jalen had already been shot and the killer was long gone. One of the bystanders called the police, while someone else noticed it was Jalen and ran in the party to tell Rick and Bash. "Bash, Bash!" she screamed, running up to his table.

"What's going on, baby girl? Slow down," he said, looking at her funny.

"Somebody shot Jalen."

"What!" he said, standing up. “Where he at?"

"In the parking lot, he was about..." she started to say, but they were already passed her and almost at the door. There was a crowd of people around him, taking pictures and recording the scene. "Get out of here!" Bash yelled, walking up. “If I see this shit on anybody's page, I'm going to hunt you down myself and trust me, you don't want that," Bash yelled at the crowd. He walking over to his friend of over a decade, lying on the ground, helpless. Rick bent down to say something to Jalen when he heard the sirens getting closer. "Hang in there my boy and I'll see you soon," he said and the two of them disappeared in the night. They sat in the car, smoking a blunt, until they saw the ambulance pull away with Jalen's body.

About the Author:

Keyanna Ford is an author, blogger and advocate for ending domestic violence. Known for her numerous works of romantic urban fiction, including the highly-acclaimed novel Living In Fear, Keyanna has built her writing career from exploring and documenting her own life experiences, and she enjoys engaging in conversation with others who have walked similar paths. Her latest sequel, I Hate That I Love You solidifies her passion to contribute to literary world.

Her inspiration to become a writer began when she was still in school, in her home town of Kalamazoo, MI. After experiencing the horror of a relationship-gone-wrong, Keyanna dealt with the pain through writing. Without a safety network to turn to for help, and at a loss as to how else to constructively deal with the pain she was feeling, Keyanna began adding fictional elements and characters to her work in order to distance herself from the reality of what had happened to her. Eventually, she had a novel worth of text and from there, her career was born.

Excerpt:

The Party

Cooper’s fingers dug into her arm with bruising force, leaving Davey no choice but to defend herself. Punching out with the heel of her free hand, she struck him in the nose. Rearing back in pain, he immediately let go and she struggled to keep her footing. Recovering, Cooper snarled and lunged to retaliate. Davey scrambled but wasn’t fast enough to escape his reach. And then suddenly she didn’t have to. A dark figure stepped into Cooper’s path, and seconds later, Cooper was on the ground bleeding and wearing a dazed look. He wouldn’t be getting up anytime soon.

Deeply shaken, Davey opened her mouth to thank her rescuer, but he had already gone. Swallowed up by the dancing mass of sweaty teenagers.

Davey wanted to be home at once. All she could think of was cuddling with Hogan while reading him a bedtime story before tucking him in. She ran outside, yanking a hoodie over her head to protect against the chill. Gulping in the misty fresh air, she calmed down enough to slow to a stroll and began what would be a long walk home. But there he was. It hadn’t been her imagination. Remington stood on the shadowy road, blocking Davey’s path.

She stopped several yards from his position. A safe distance away, she hoped. “What do you want?”

His reply was so low she could barely make it out. “I needed to be sure.”

Davey’s heart was thudding out of her chest. Had he seen her dealing? “About what?”

“That you were okay.”

“Oh.” She hadn’t expected that. “If you were so worried, why didn’t you stick around?”

“The directive tonight was recon only.” Remington took a step closer. “I think I may have compromised it by causing a scene.”

Weirdo alarm bells ringing at full volume, Davey took two steps back. “I’m sorry saving my ass messed up your mission. Thanks anyway.” Going in the other direction would get her away from him but also make the trek home thirty minutes longer. It really didn’t seem like a bad trade off.

“What did that guy want from you?”

“It’s none of your business.” Davey quickly started walking.

Remington followed. “You could have been hurt.”

“Again, none of your business.” She doubled her stride, but he kept pace effortlessly. Forging ahead for about fifty feet, Davey stopped. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m escorting you home.”

Flabbergasted, her mouth opened and shut. “Why?” she finally asked.

Remington watched her for a quiet moment. His features were oddly attractive in the glow of the streetlights. “I swore to serve and protect. It’s my job to keep you safe.”

Unconvinced, she gestured toward the house where the party raged on. “So a cop is going to show up and escort every one of those kids home too?”

“No.”

She folded her arms. “Then why are you following me?”

Remington shifted. “I don’t know.”

It wasn’t really an answer, but the way he spoke, as well as the manner of his movements, made the words seem true. Plus, Remington hadn’t appeared comfortable admitting them.

“What’s your name?”

“Officer Remington.”

“Well, I don’t like cops. Give me something else to call you.”

“Like what?”

Davey rolled her eyes. “Like your first name.”

“Oh.” Remington smiled. The expression transformed his features, and she thought he should do it more often. “Ethan.”

“Okay, Ethan. Walk me home.”

EXCERPT:

“In the vision, I was sitting on a bench,” says Jomeini, her eyes distant. “The sunlight beat warm against the stone I sat on, but the wind that blew was brisk and harsh. A storm rode on that wind, a storm I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop. Afterwards, I drew this.”

Jomeini pulls another card from beside the others and hands it to Shasa.

“It’s a coat,” Shasa says, confused. She traces a finger over the handless, headless trenchcoat, drawn as though it’s blowing in the very wind Jomeini claims she felt during its vision.

“I assumed it meant that I wouldn’t be comfortable in my home much longer, that I would need protection from whatever storm was riding on that wind. I assumed it meant that Grandfather was taking me from my refuge, my home in Xavienke, and that I would need to find protection in Valadir. And it did, in a sense. But the drawing was also literal. Whose coat do you see?”

Chills brush across Shasa’s skin. “Color it yellow, and that could be Craven’s.”

Jomeini rubs her arms as if chafing away whatever memory fills her mind at that moment. Shasa wonders if it’s the same one she’s recalling, the sight of the dingy yellow trenchcoat Craven wore the day he snatched Shasa from right in front of the Triad Palace into an abandoned building and stole her magic then and there.

“What does the star mean, then?” Shasa asks. When Jomeini doesn’t answer immediately, Shasa continues thinking aloud. “Stars provide light in the night sky. They’ve held their places for years, giving sailors something to sail by.”

“But this one is a shooting star,” Jomeini says. “This one is setting off on its own course.”

“And you think it pertains to Tyrus?”

Jomeini shakes her head. “I thought so at first. I Saw Tyrus, yes. But I Saw others with him. Among his soldiers was a blonde woman I didn’t recognize.”

“A group of stars,” Shasa says inwardly. “With one straying from all the rest.”

“It means change is coming, and someone is at the center of it. I thought it was Tyrus, but now I’m not so sure. See the other star beside this? See how the bursts on the star go one way, so it looks like the star can be spearing to the left? But if you look at it this way…” Jomeini turns the card until it’s upside down. “Now the star could be shooting to the right.”

“So Tyrus isn’t leaving?”

“Not in so many words. It’s more complicated than I can explain, but something Tyrus is going to do will be as vast as the effort of crossing an ocean with no other guide but the stars. It’s going to change the world as we know it. And depending on what we do, that change is going to veer the races one way or the other. For good.” She holds the star picture one way. “Or for ill.” She turns it the other direction.

Shasa swallows and takes the card, experimenting. The star’s direction turns with each flip, more indecisive than the weather. It’s like the picture of a smiling man with a furrow in his forehead her mother used to draw. She would turn it upside down, and though the picture hadn’t changed at all, the man would look sad and menacing instead. All because of one or two carefully placed lines.

“So how do we get this change to veer in the direction we want it to go?” Shasa asks.

Jomeini doesn’t answer. Instead, she fingers the collar at her throat. The two girls sit in the boat in silence, bathing in the deep wake of their thoughts.
